  • Privatisation has become a central plank of Saudi Arabia’s plan to reduce the role of the public sector in the economy.
  • The experience from Latin America, where large-scale privatisation programmes were launched, highlights that such initiatives can succeed.
  • Over the 1988-2008 period, privatisation proceeds made up 0.5% of GDP in Latin America, 0.2% of GDP in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, 0.14% of GDP in MENA and 0.1% of GDP in Europe, Central & East Asia.
